Six Tartans Earn All-UAA Honors
May 1 – (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Six Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis athletes were honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) following the completion of the regular season in which the Tartans finished second at the UAA Championship held at Brandeis University. Two singles players and one doubles pair was named to the All-UAA first team, while a doubles pair and one singles player was named to the second team.
Freshmen Courtney Chin (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) and
Cze-Ja Tam (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula)
earned first team accolades at third and sixth singles, respectively. Chin won all three of her matches at the UAA Championship and tallied a 26-1 regular season singles play record with her only loss coming in three sets in the semifinals of the ITA Regional tournament. Tam also compiled a 3-0 record at the championship and moved through the regular season with a 20-3 record including the match clincher against Denison University in the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championship.
The doubles pair of sophomore Jennifer Chui (Saratoga, Calif./Monta Vista) and freshman Amanda Wu (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) earned first team honors at third doubles for a 3-0 performance at Brandeis and lost just one match in 15 appearances for the year.
Freshman Laura Chen (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) was named to the second team following a 3-0 performance at No. 1 singles. The ITA Southeast Regional Champion and ITA National Singles Runner-Up won 21 singles matches in 2009 while playing in the number one slot for the entire season.
Joining Chen on the second team is the No. 2 doubles pair of Chin and sophomore Kelly Hart (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Joaquin). Since pairing up in early February, the combo has won 13 matches while dropping three including a 2-1 performance at the UAA Championship.
Hart and Chui are being recognized for the second year as Chui was co-rookie of the year in 2008 and a second-team singles player while Hart was a first-team doubles player.
